Did you know October is National Adopt a Dog Month? That makes this time of year the perfect time to add a furry addition to your family. The month-long celebration advocates for adopting dogs from shelters, rather than buying from breeders. Oklahoma has no shortage of animal shelters, so there is sure to be one near you!
Adopting a Dog
Almost all adults (age 18+) are allowed to adopt dogs in the state of Oklahoma. The exception is people who have been previously charged with animal abuse or neglect in the past. Depending on where you decide to adopt a dog from, there may or may not be adoption fees. These are usually less than $100. According to Oklahoma laws, all dogs adopted from a shelter are required to be spayed/neutered. This means they will not be able to have puppies. All adopted shelter animals will also be up-to-date on their vaccinations.
Below is a short list of some of the best-rated animal shelters around Oklahoma.
- Oklahoma City Animal Shelter
- Bethany Animal Welfare
- Midwest City Animal Welfare
- Edmond Animal Shelter
- Northern Oklahoma Human Society (Ponca City)
Pet Supplies
There’s an old saying that says, “There’s no such thing as a free puppy.” The simple fact of the matter is that animals can be expensive to take care of. Only adopt a new pet if you know you can afford to buy it food, a leash, and the occasional medical expense. According to The Spruce Pets, taking care of a dog can cost anywhere from $125 to over $800 a month, depending on the pet’s health, whether you want to put the dog in obedience classes, and if you need to hire a dog walker. The average person with a healthy dog will be closer to the $125 end of the spectrum. Still, it is important to remember that unexpected medical expenses may add up.
Moving onto the more fun aspect of shopping for pet supplies… There is a world of cute pet toys to choose from. With Halloween coming up, there are sure to be some great costumes too. Of course, Sample Oklahoma has something for you too! We have a great pet treat subscription box that you can use to spoil your new dog!

Charity
Of course, not everyone has room in their home for a new dog, and that’s okay! There are other ways to celebrate Adopt a Dog Month. Animal shelters are always looking for donations of food, supplies, and money.
Sample Oklahoma also works with Adriana’s Saints and Angels, a foster animal rescue service that focuses on helping Saint Bernard dogs and cats find new homes. They’re a great organization to adopt from as well!
