Did you know that Hispanic Heritage Month starts in September? Oddly enough, it doesn’t start on September 1, but on the 15th. It then continues through October 15th. According to the 2020 census, almost 500,000 people in Oklahoma are Hispanic! With Oklahoma only having about 4 million people total, that means about 1 in every 8 Okies are Hispanic! What better reason to celebrate their heritage? Below are some great ideas you can use to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.
Visit the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum
The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City is hosting a Heritage Table event for Hispanic Heritage Month. This exhibit launches on September 15 and foes through October 15. It will focus on Oklahoma’s first cowboys, the vaqueros. Children will also have the opportunity to make their own spurs!
The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday – Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Museum entrance is free for members and ranges from $5-15 per person based on age.
Attend the “Presente in Oklahoma” Lunch and Learn Presentation
If you want to learn about Hispanic culture for free, then attending the Presente in Oklahoma event is your best bet. This event will take place at the Oklahoma History Center in Oklahoma City on September 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
This event will focus on both Hispanic culture from the past and social issues the group is facing today, such as immigration. While the event is free, pre-registration is required. Attendees may also pack a lunch or purchase a boxed lunch at the event.
Eat at a Hispanic-Owned Restaurant
You don’t have to go far in Oklahoma to find a Mexican, Tex-Mex, or other Hispanic-inspired or owned restaurant. One of the best ways to support any cultural group in today’s day and age is to support local and small business owners. When giving back to your community is as tasty as this, you’ll be looking for excuses to eat out more. Some of the best-rated Mexican, Tex-Mex, and Hispanic-owned restaurants in Oklahoma are listed below.
- Crudqolandia, Oklahoma City
- El Dicho, Oklahoma City
- Tiera Mia Nicaraguan Latin Grill, Bethany
- Zarate’s Latin Mexican Grill, Edmond
